Hello, I am trying to find out a name of a rose that my Mother had in her yard from the time I was small... It has always been there for as long as I can remember. Now Mother has passed on and the property was sold.... my daughter was suppose to go and dig up at least a part of the rose... but didn't get to before they bulldozed it :(. I have a picture of it and will post it with this. It only bloomed one time a year, was normally in late April or May and was usually finished by Memorial Day. It was like a shrub type that kept spreading out each year. It has a wonderful old rose fragrance that would fill your house with just a few blooms. It bloomed also in clusters... and it would be covered with pinkish, purple blooms... I just am heart sick that I didn't get a piece of this rose.... I do know it isn't Knock Out... if anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I wrote to the Rose Society before and got no where with it... Thanks so much Vickie email - Shyanne652@aol.com

I'm not very familiar with old garden roses, so I'm sorry I can't ID this rose for you. I would suggest you try an advanced search. On the left hand there is a selection for 'Roses' click there. On that page on the top there are tabs, select 'advanced search'. I did a search using just bloom for ; semi-double to double, once blooming
Color classifications for these older roses can be frustrating, and we don't know what type of rose it is so those I left blank. See if any of the roses this search brings up come close to your Mother's rose. You could also try; Double, once blooming.
Good luck

Vickie, the picture is viewable in this post and another one. I can't say why it doesn't show up for you. It was a lovely arching rose bush. It's hard to see the blooms very well. But a nice whole bush shot.

Hi Vickie, Could your rose possibly be Seven Sisters? When you mentioned both pink and purple on the bush, I immediately thought of this old cascading rambler that once blooms, has a strong fragrance, and whose flowers take on different shadings as they age on the bush. Take a look at the photos for Seven Sisters on the Help Me Find page and see if you see a resemblance. I can! Claire, St Louis, Missouri

This looks like Mary Austin, a David Austin rose which has a very long bloom season.

See if it has "moss" by the bottom of the buds; if so it could be Common Moss rose.

Could you describe how the rose bush grows? Such as tall and upright of lax and bending over. Does it sucker, have many thorns or get black spot? Is it very fragrant and how would you describe the colour such as pink or mauve pink.

Yes, it is a pinkish Mauve I believe... it is lax and bends over ... its a shrub type, that spreads out at the base and gets wilder and wilder.... it does have thorns... I can't remember if it has alot of thorns... it seems like it had quite a few on a stem. And it only bloomed once a year ... lasting about a month or maybe alittle longer... in the spring of the year... we lived in West Virginia.... not sure but think that was in zone 5 or 6.
I have been looking at the David Austin site... I found 3 roses that looks like it could be.... Duchesee d'Angouleme.......Queen of Denmark..... or La Ville de Bruxelles... I think it might be Duchesee d'Angouleme.....
Thanks for the interest and help in my Mothers rose... Vickie

La Ville de Bruxelles is a very large, tall bush and the flower are a light rose pink and the Duchesse has blowsy flower of a blush pink. However, from the shape and colour of the flowers, I think it may be the Gallica, Belle de Crecy. Here is a picture of my Belle de Crecy.

My instant reaction to your two photographs was that it is Queen of Denmark. It depends on the foliage - can you remember what it was like? Q of D's is quite light and sort-of-ordinary, if you know what I mean, lots of it, soft rather than shiny, very healthy. I grow both Q of D and Ducjesse d'Angouleme, and could photograph them for identification if you are still wondering. I'm sure it's not Ville de Bruxelles - which is a sharper pink altogeether.
