Rosa ‘Marquess Boccalla’
Described as a Hybrid Perpetual in contemporary literature. Dickerson classifies it as a Damask Perpetual. ‘Marquess Boccalla’ has very pale, flesh-coloured flowers and a dwarf habit. It was recommended as a continuous bloomer in The Gardeners’ Chronicle. [Paul (1848, 1863), Gard. Chron. 1851]. ...

Included in a handwritten list of roses dated 1861, probably intended for a new edition of the catalogue that was never printed. [MP A2943].

This rose has a number of synonyms, all variations of ‘Marquess Boccalla’, such as ‘Marquise de Boccella’.

Leonie even sparred in print with eminent British rosarian Graham Stuart Thomas over 'Jacques Cartier', that variety's third commercial name in 15 years. She maintained correctly that this rose was 'Marquise Boccella', a very early Hybrid Perpetual from 1842. [In one of the early journals of the Heritage Rose Foundation, Charles Walker identified this rose as 'Marchesa Boccella' - Ed.]

Unfortunately, Pergolèse (Moreau et Robert, 1860), Comte de Chambord (Moreau et Robert 1860), Marie Robert (Moreau et Robert, circa 1860?), Jacques Cartier (Moreau-Robert, 1868), and Rembrandt (Moreau-Robert, 1883) all seem to be wrongly named.....Jacques Cartier is likely the Hybrid Perpetual Marchesa Boccella (Desprez/Cochet, 1840), despite a rather faint protest from Graham Thomas.

From a garden of approximately 170 roses, I have chosen the following varieties as the best performers.....Jacques Cartier (1868) & 'Comte de Chambord' (1863) - Portland Roses. Under 1m shrubs of deep pink. Highly perfumed and very old fashioned looking. Excellent foliage. Both a must in a small garden.
