A fitting tribute to its breeder, the late John Simpson, who sadly passed away before it won its award. A good all round performer in the garden and on the show bench, the red and pink toned blooms still stand out today.

Book (1989) Page(s) 75. Nola Simpson, Manawatu: 'Velvet Lustre'. This rose would be my absolute favourite, partially because it is John's, but also it does so well in my garden and I suppose I pick more blooms of this one than any other rose. Strong healthy bushes, but not too tall and the blooms have that refined elegance that sets it apart, together with the blending of colours, red through to apricot pink in the centre.

p74 Dave and Jean Gillies, Napier. 'Velvet Lustre' Nola Simpson 1980. This Hybrid Tea is a favourite in the decorative stage. It has that refined, elegant look that is so admired. We haven't exhibited one yet as the best blooms always seem to come between shows.

For quantity of bloom off a single plant, over the growing season, there would be few roses that could compete with this toned pink HT rose. The flowers have good form, stand the weather well and the bush has a high tolerance level of most rose diseases. Best grown in a sunny position.

p79. Del Simpson. Central Taranaki Rose Society. 10 Favourite Roses. 'Velvet Lustre' (Simpson, 1980). HT. One of "our" John and Nola's fine roses that is very aptly named. Royal magenta-red with lighter tonings, may not give you much of an idea, but you really have to see this one to appreciate its luminous qualities. we have had some great decorative and exhibition blooms from very healthy bushes. It has the most exotic perfume. Truly a rose for every occasion.
