Analysis of Floral Scent Components of Rosa foetida Herrm

‘Agnes’ has a citrus-like green scent, and almost no R. foetida-like unpleasant odor in its flowers. The major scent components are caryophyllene and α-farnesene. Caryophyllene is thought to be inherited from R. foetida f. persiana and α-farnesene is thought to be inherited from R. rugosa. Fatty acid derivatives, the characteristic scent components of R. foetida were not detected in this cultivar.

The major scent components of ‘Antoine Ducher’, the seed parent of these two cultivars [Rhodophile Gravereaux and Soleil d'Or], is geraniol, nerol and 2-phenylethanol.

‘Harison’s Yellow’ has a citrus-like sour-sweet scent, and almost no R. foetida-like unpleasant odor in its flowers. The major scent component of ‘Harison’s Yellow’ is geranyl acetate. A trace amount of (Z)- jasmone, a characteristic scent component of R. foetida, was detected in this cultivar

‘Rhodophile Gravereaux’ has a citrus scent. ‘Soleil d’Or’ has a fruity scent with a sweet citrus-like scent. Both cultivars do not have an unpleasant R. foetida-like odor. The major scent component of ‘Rhodophile Gravereaux’ is geranyl acetate, and those of ‘Soleil d’ Or’ are geranyl acetate, geraniol, 2-phenylethanol and 2-phenylethyl acetate. In both cultivars, fatty acid derivatives, the characteristic scent components of R. foetida, were not detected.

GC-MS analysis revealed the major scent components of R. foetida and R. foetida var. bicolor were geranyl acetate, 2-phenylethanol, and 2-phenylethyl acetate, each rose with different ratios. The main scent component of R. foetida f. persiana was caryophyllene. The ratio of hydrocarbons was high in R. foetida and its sport cultivars. Characteristic aromatic components of R. foetida and its sport cultivars in this study were the fatty acid derivatives (E, E)- and/or (E, Z)-2,4- decadienal (2,4-DA), (E, E)-2,4-decadienol (2,4-DO), and (Z)-jasmone. In addition, trace amounts of methyl dihydrojasmonate was detected in R. foetida (data not shown). These components are unreported for the plant genus Rosa.

The major scent component is geranyl acetate, and the ratio of other acetates such as citronellyl acetate and 2-phenylethyl acetate is also high. Fatty acid derivatives, the charac‐ teristic scent components of R. foetida, were not detect‐ ed.
