Margaret Furness. “Lilydale Younger”. I first encountered this intriguing spring-flowerer in John Nieuwesteeg’s garden, on my way to the HRIA Conference at Mornington (it took days to get the fine bristle out of my finger). He collected it from the Younger grave at Lilydale, where Dame Nellie Melba is buried, north-east of Melbourne. The Younger family lived at Yering, which also had a Tea of interest. “Lilydale Younger” has soft-looking light-green leaves, and we haven’t seen hips on it. The flowers are palest pink or cream, semi-double, and when pot-grown, similar to but larger than those of ‘Stanwell Perpetual’. At Ruston’s it is low-growing and suckering. We’ve recently had some plants budded, in case we’re ever brave enough to replace the suckerers in the Collections at Renmark. We have some to donate to anyone interested, within the restrictions of quarantine. Our best guess so far is that it’s a species hybrid. If anyone recognizes it, Please let us know! p18.
