Margaret Furness.  A Found Remontant "Captain Olsen
This rose, thought to be a Hybrid Perpetual, was collected by Elizabeth Newell from a garden at Swan Hill on the Murray, about halfway between Echuca and Mildura. It was bought by her grandparents in 1912, or perhaps 1922, from a riverboat captain.....Somehow the rose acquired the additional study name of “Swan Hill Red”, when Elizabeth gave it to Pat Toolan. Plants reached Renmark and eventually the Blakiston schoolhouse garden. Semidouble, petals paler on the reverse, stamens visible when the flower is fully open. It has moderate repeat and scent, and sets a good crop of hips. It’s upright-growing and well-armed. On its own roots “Captain Olsen” is spindly with many basal shoots, and suckers a little.  It gets black spot in some gardens.
