Bahçesaray (Bakhchisaraj) was the capital of the Crimean Tatar Khanate from the 16th century until the annexation by Russia in 1783. The palace of the Khans (saray) is famous for its delicate architecture. The Fountain of Tears (fontan) in its garden dates to 1763. It was built by the Khan Kirim Giray out of grief for his dead wife. The story inspired Alexander Pushkin to his poem "Bakhchisarajskij Fontan" (1823).
