Another rose, a hybrid perpetual of 1865, at its best is nearly as dark as ‘Nigrette’ but with luster and shadings of its nearly black crimson-maroon color. Certainly it is more beautiful. And it emits a strong Damask fragrance. This rose is the fabulous ‘Souvenir du Dr. Jamain’. I have two such plants, one growing on my upper hillside in sun where it is sometimes inclined to burn, and the other at the bottom of the hill beside a wall, growing in almost complete shade where it displays perfect blooms. It was named for Dr. Jean-Alexandre Jamain, the son of a horticulturist, probably Dupuy Jamain who founded one of the oldest nurseries in Paris. As a medical doctor and later a surgeon, he was a prolific writer on medical topics. He wrote some fifty articles for the Medical Dictionary, a Manual of Minor Surgery, a longer work on the blood of the scrotum, and several other books. He died in 1862. In 1865, the famous breeder Lacharme named his new rose ‘Souvenir du Dr. Jamain’ in his honor.

A much overlooked selection, this Docteur catches both the eye and nose with its unusual deep color and superb perfume when in bloom. 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' is equally good as a shrub or trained onto a support as a climber. The bendable canes lend themselves to training onto a pillar or tripod, and you get a more easily contained shrub along with the added benefit of increased bloom. ...
The thin canes of 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' will arch out to 8 feet or more, with a nearly equal spread, and when given support they can attain 12 feet. New canes are plum-colored with oval, pointed chartreuse green foliage edged with antique bronze. The smooth gray-green mature canes carry only the occasional small red-green prickle. Round, blood red buds are produced in small clusters and open to fully petaled, ruffled, velvety crimson-to-plum, cupped flowers with bright yellow stamens at their centers. There is an occasional white streak, known as quilling, which tags the velvety texture of the petals. The fragrance is strong and sweet of Cabbage Rose perfume. Rebloom is good in spring and fall, though only intermittent the rest of the season. The foliage is prone to problems such as mildew, so be on the alert if that's a concern in your area.....

Page 148: Souvenir du Docteur Jamain Hybrid Perpetual. Lacharme (France) 1865. 'Général Jacqueminot' x 'Charles Lefebvre'. Description... the petals "burn" and turn brown in hot sunshine... velvety, dark wine-coloured blooms clouded over with murrey-purple [murrey is the color of crushed mulberries]. Very fragrant... The Hon. V. Sackville-West found it at Hollamby's Nurseries, Groombridge, and generously distributed it...

Page 30: Hybrid Perpetual... rescued from obscurity by Vita Sackville-West, who discovered it growing in an old nursery. A 'sweetly and sentimentally scented' deep wine-red, it demands a little protection from the sun; as only she could put it, 'he burns'.

... Not a typical Hybrid Perpetual... notable for its deep rich dark crimson colouring and its equally deep and rich perfume... like so many crimson roses, [it] does not make ideal growth, being rather lean and lanky... It has for some years also been on sale under the name of 'Souvenir d'Alphonse Lavallée', though it is impossible to see any difference between the two...
