PANACHÉE SUPERBE Laffay (?), 1841 (?). Habit: less upright than the gallica type; quite strong branches; numerous and large hooked prickles; almost no bristles. Foliage: abundant; light green; large lanceolated leaflets; smooth and wavy, not very gallica-looking. Bloom: quite abundant blooming; solitary or in clusters of 2 to 4 blooms; medium or small, double, cupped; some stamens visible. Colour: pink strongly mottled with violet-purple. Fragrance: moderate....The variety currently at L'Haÿ, under the name "Panachée superbe", brings forth a bloom of pink strongly mottled with violet-purple, should not be confused with the previous [Panachée superbs]. It is attributed to Laffay, 1841, but we have found no trace of it in the catalogues of the era. Its foliage suggests hybridisation with a China, which is effectuively quite in the style of Laffay.
