Arlequin Before 1841. Habit : upright shrub, many prickles and bristles. Foliage : dark, abundant, large elliptical leaflets. Bloom : flat; medium size; double, but some visible stamens; small eye in the centre; petals reflex when aging. Colour : purple-pink. Fragrance : moderate to weak. [Describes earlier 'Arlequin' froom Holland]...Then, from 1841 onwards, an 'Arlequin' appears in Vibert's catalogues, of which he is not the breeder. The bloom is described as "medium, full, light red mottled". ...It is...this second variety which corresponds to the specimen currently found at L'Haÿ (and Gap-Charance), described above. ...In the literature at L'Haÿ this was confused [with the earlier variety]....All this remains thus quite uncertain, ...as the current 'Arlequin' is not clearly mottled...
