This reminds me of Mossy de Meaux, but at 2" diameter it is larger.

I found this rose growing at an old homestead from the early 1800's in Belmont, New Hampshire. It was ignored and severely neglected. It has survived over the many years in spite of lack of water or pruning, being plagued by Japanese Beetles every summer, and it had been cut down many times, only to rally and recover. It suckers readily and is virtually indestructable. It is very hardy, and needs no protection. It is very fragrant. The blooms are small; only about 2 to 3 inches across but very tight rosettes, often with a button eye. The color is a medium pink. The bush has very thin canes which have no real thorns....just stiff bristles. The buds have light green mossing which is very soft and sticky and smells of pine. Older canes are a dark brown, while young canes are pale green. It has 7-leaflet leaves which are a very dark green and stiff. This rose was transplanted into my yard, pruned, watered & fertilized and promptly sent out a multitude of suckers. Its growth habit is compact and bushy, growing to about 3 1/2 feet tall. The blooms sit atop the leaves in the Portland fashion. I have seen this same rose growing in a couple of other places around town, all still growing despite neglect. but no one knows its name or origin. My town was incorporated in the l730's and many of the homes there date from the early 1800's. This is a wonderful, carefree moss rose....if anyone thinks they know its identity, you can contact me. Until I know its true name, I have named it "Belmont Pink Powderpuff Moss".

Wow! It would be my dream to find or rediscover a moss rose! Like you, I also love old garden roses, my passion being for the moss roses. I am constantly studying them and I will keep you and your moss in mind. If I can possible figure out what it might be, I will be sure to let you know! Have you looked at Soupert et Notting?

Thank you for your interest in my found moss rose. I also love the old mosses and think they are fascinating. I do have a sucker of this rose if you are interested. I haven't been able to find another moss that matches it exactly, although some have similiarities. It is always nice to hear from others who love roses!
