I am reading Roses in the Little Garden, G.A.Stevens, ed., Mrs. Francis King, 1926: Magna Charta, 1876, “ a lovely, lovely old rose, for which I have the greatest admiration and respect. I know none better in tender deep-pink color, or surpassing it in fragrance. It is one of the very best and most desirable of all roses. I have never seen it in bloom in autumn.” Quite an endorsement, but seems not as popular today. Author appears to have lived in northern Ohio.

These roses grow were grown from cuttings in my neighbour's garden, they was were planted by her mother in the 1950's as "one rose that changed colour". The plants are identical except for the flowers. I thought they may have been 'Magna Charta' that reverted to 'Mme Gabriel Luizet'. It grows about 2.5m tall and has an upright style of growth. The fragrance is very good and it repeats a bit but our summer climate is cool and damp so it is probably not growing at its best. I wonder what other members think?

The Garden (May 20, 1876)
H. P. Rose Magna Charta (W. Paul).— A large full variety of great merit, the colour being a warm rose flushed in the centre with fiery rose. It is well worth a place even in the most select collection.
