Book (Nov 1994) Page(s) 135. Mme Ernst Calvat. Bourbon. Vve Schwartz, France, 1888. This very vigorous pillar rose can be pruned to encourage bushy growth if required. It is unique among roses in the rich crimson-purple of the leaves on the strong shoots. This colour makes a wonderful foil for the globular cabbagy blooms, which appear constantly through summer and autumn, of warm flesh pink, with darker reverses. The blooms are frequently and characteristically quartered. Of rare beauty in many ways. 7 to 8 feet. In view of the dates of introduction of this rose and Mme Isaac Pereire', and the fact that the latter occurred as a sport on the former in Father Curtis's garden near Dublin, it seems that 'Mme Ernst Calvat' was originally a sport from Mme Isaac Pereire.
