Robert Edwin Peary was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on February 20, 1920. He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy. In 1888, he married Josephine Diebitsch who accompanied him on many of his expeditions, including four expeditions that her husband led to northern Greenland between 1886 and 1900 that proved Greenland was an island and not a continent. On April 6, 1909, Peary's party reached the North Pole.
