'Arethusa'...seems to have some Tea influence based on similarity and its coordinates in the Figure 5, but it is classified as a Hybrid China with unknown parentage bred in 1903 (Cairns (ed.), 2000). Because this accession also has a chloroplast sequence that is unique in this study, it does not give a clear indication of what species or group may have had a maternal contribution to this hybrid.

‘Arethusa’. Raised by Paul. Parentage unknown. Introduced 1903. China hybrid. Size 1m x 1m. As with the previous China hybrid mentioned, this beautiful rose grows to a rounded shrub of about 1m tall and wide. Its dark green glossy foliage is a lovely background for the deep apricot buds opening to lighter apricot loosely double blooms, which have a pleasant fragrance,. Ideal for smaller gardens.

‘Arethusa’ = Chine – tons jaunes, remontant. De juin à l’automne, inlassablement, ce rosier bas épanouit ses bouquets de fleurs un peu échevelées, jaune clair teinté de jaune abricot…. feuillage épars est sain et brillant… La fontaine d’Aréthuse en Sicile abritait, selon la légende, une naïade du même nom… Paul, UK, 1903.

'Arethusa'. Old. China. Yellow blend. Repeat flowering. Clusters of yellow-apricot, blowzy blooms cover this short shrub from summer until autumn. Although it is gawky in appearance, it is a valuable plant in the border if it is surrounded by perennials. The foliage is healthy, shiny and sparse. …..Arethusa was a famous spring in Syracuse, Sicily, in ancient times and, according to legend, a naiad of the same name made it her home. Zones 5-10. 'Arethusa'. China. The bush is on the large side for a China Rose, but ‘Arethusa’ still retains much of the China Rose daintiness in its slender stems and dark shiny foliage. Like most of its class it is in flower throughout the season. The color of the flowers varies with the time of year. Sometimes it is more yellow, at others more apricot. The flowers are moderately full and are arranged in small sprays. Foliage is small and dark green. ‘Arethusa’ is a relatively new China, having been introduced only in 1903 by William Paul. Arethusa was the goddess of fountains to the ancient Greeks and, as such, no doubt a regular visitor to gardens. Parentage unknown. Repeat flowering.
