John Nieuwesteeg. Letter To The Editor.
While on the subject of sports, somewhere along the way someone wrote in error about my rose Helga Brichet being a sport of 'Complicata'. This sort of thing happens all too easily and one spends the rest of his life trying in vain to correct the error. 'Helga Brichet' is my seedling of 'Complicata'. I had two or three seedlings. Helga did see them and when I said to her "this one needs a name," she said "you could call it Helga Brichet," and so it came to be.

Susan Irvine ....One of the most popular among the gallica roses is the great ‘Complicata’, vibrant pink and single. It grows tall. I have seen it winding its way into trees. I had a couple in the garden, but ordered three more this year so that I could plant them in a group. The roses duly arrived, and with them were three very sturdy plants labelled ‘Helga Brichet’. I had never heard of this one, and could not find it in any rose book. I rang the supplier and was delighted to discover that it is a sport of ‘Complicata’, and similar in all respects except that it is a much paler pink. So I planted the two roses alternately in a large circle. They flower only in spring, so it is important to make the most of this lovely period in the garden and to visit them every day.
