Dr. A. S. Thomas.  Red Roses.
Gloria di Roma, President Boone and Mirandy are all too big for decorative uses, but are wonderful show roses in favourable weather; they open slowly and so need several calm warm days for red roses do not tolerate protection by covering. They seldom produce good blooms in Melbourne except at intervals in mid-Summer...President Boone always needs wiring to overcome its head-hanging, and it is not as pointed or as free with its flowers as Mirandy...Nevertheless, they are all great roses in districts that suit them.

Other dark reds are:- Fred Howard's President Boone, a fine big crimson flower with rich fragrance on a very vigorous plant. Its fault is a weak neck, which can be at least partially overcome with a diet of wood ashes.
