Nola Murray. The Torch-Bearer and his Torch. ......
The name 'Cresset' comes from the French 'le crueset' meaning 'the torch' and 'Cresset' is indeed a glowing torch, a fiery beacon, lighting the path of successful endeavour upon which the amateur New Zealand hybridist sets his feet.
Book  (1967)  Page(s) 132.

Raymond Appleyard. Letters from Dr. R. S. R. Francis.
In his letters to me as well as in his numerous articles in Rose Annuals, Dr. Francis revealed a deep understanding of rose breeding. His achievements in this field seem amazing when it is realised that he had only a quarter-acre section and had a busy medical practice, but his success was no accident. He said: "My new rose 'Cresset', to be sold by Mason of Feilding this next season, was an attempt to combine the factors of Rose Multibracteata (through 'Queen Elizabeth') and the Wichuraiana and Moschata factors pesent in 'Cororico' which is [ ('Guinee' (C. HT) and 'Wilhelm' (H. Moschata) x 'Orange Triumph') ] x 'Orange Triumph. 'Orange Triumph' is 'Eva' (H. Moschata) x 'Solarium' (H. Wichuraiana). so there should be plenty of Moschata and Wichuraiana genes present in 'Cocorico'. What I want to stress is that it was a planned cross, worked out in the winter - not a whim when walking round the garden - and an attempt to combine near-species roses. 'Cresset' shows it in vigour and disease resistance - wonderful foliage, one head of bloom on the original seedling, still on its own roots, has 24 buds in various stages."

John F. Gover. The Floribunda Story. 'Cresset'. Probably the best seedling rose yet raised in New Zealand it bears better shaped, though smaller flowers than its female parent, 'Queen Elizabeth'. These are borne in vase profusion and, in fact, it would be difficult to name a floribunda bush carrying more bloom at any one time. Not only this, but it carries it over the whole flowering season practically without a break. The colour is bright red befitting a descendant of 'Cororico', the male parent. Not as tall as 'Queen Elizabeth' it reaches 4 or 5 ft on bushes well clothed with healthy, dark green foliage. Despite its shorter growth it makes as much wood as 'Queen Elizabeth'.
