Well Known Queensland Rose Hybridist, Fred Armbrust. ….One of the most promising of these understocks has been named Rose Mitchelton, and one Brisbane nurseryman has gone over completely to it, while another very prominent Victorian nurseryman has planted out 10,000 cuttings for use during the 1967 season. It is completely thornless, and is mildew and blackspot resistant, and can be used as a hedge. It is also completely covered with pale pink blooms for a long period in spring.

Book (1965) Page(s) 145. V. Burdekin, Gosnells, W.A. Rose Understocks. After reading an article in the 1960 ‘Australian and New Zealand Rose Annual..... I obtained plants and bud sticks of Dr. Huey from Mr. F. Armbrust. He also gave me two of his own understock hybrids, both of which were produced at the instigation of Dr. Thomas. These two hybrids are progeny of the following: Serial 1-65-59 – R. multiflora x I.X.L.

Queensland’s noted breeder, Fred Armbrust, has made a good start on understock breeding and has several crosses, some of them suggested by the writer. However, of course, results will be a long time hence. From a long friendship with Mr. Armbrust, I should imagine he has the understock question right at heart and will do his best to produce what we want here at any rate.
