April Hamer. Hybrid tea bred by Ron Bell in 1983. This lovely garden rose is great for table arrangements and the show bench. The flowers are a little small, very double and perfectly formed with a nice fragrance. The colour is ivory pink, not losing colour as they age. The shrub is strong with good disease resistance, long stems with dark glossy foliage.

[Author?] It is said not to be wise to name a rose after a politician as you immediately reduce the potential market by 50%! I once asked Ron Bell how he came to name his now famous rose ‘April Hamer’. Ron said he was at a Victorian show which was being opened by the then Premier of Victoria, Rupert Hamer and was going to name the rose in his honour. However, the Premier said to Ron, “You had better name it after the wife” (April). Obviously the political association had no adverse impact on the popularity of the rose which still features regularly on show benches Australia wide. (It recently found its way to England and is reportedly also doing well there).
