Nola Murray. Getting the Red. So what sort of chance has the poor old amateur. Nevertheless, it is still possible for him to breed an extremely good red hybrid tea as John Simpson did. This rose, named 'Simpson's Red' won the Silver Medal of the City of Palmerston North in 1975. I saw it many times as it went through its paces in trial and it is a beauty. But why is it not on the market for us to buy (available from some nurseries. Ed. N.Z.R.A.)...Here is a short list of the crossings of some successful red hybrid teas, any of which could give you "The Red". 'Simpson's Red' - 'Red Lion' x 'Grand Amore'.....

Dr. Joan Walton. The 100th Bulls Rose Show. the well stocked stalls, the lunch and the afternoon tea did a booming trade. The Centennial Stall did brisk business selling souvenir tankards, special biro pens and copies of the Centennial history. Orders were taken for the award winning rose 'Simpson's Red', presented to the Lower Rangitikei Rose Society by Mr. John Simpson.
