'Dorothy McGredy' rose References
Book (1940) Page(s) 124. Mr. Frank Mason. The Newer Roses in New Zealand. Dorothy McGredy came about the same time, but through some oversight it was not planted up in the new bed. The blooms are sem-double with a very strong scent. The combination of yellow and pink is a very pretty one. It has pleased me very much.
Book (1938) p98. S.R. Bird. Auckland Roses. Dorothy McGredy is somewhat after the style of Condesa de Sastago,
p106. John Poulsen, NZ. Roses in the South Island Dorothy McGredy. Good growth and foliage, flowering very freely; opening colour very good but fades badly in the older blooms.
Website/Catalog (1938) Page(s) 17. Bush Roses Dorothy McGredy (Hybrid Tea)... Orange carmine. The outside of the petals is sunflower yellow, shading off to crushed strawberry, whilst the inner side is vermilion, with a saffron yellow base. The flowers are of medium size and good shape, upright, and freely produced. Cedar green foliage; mildew-proof. A distinct novelty. Highly perfumed. Introduced 1936.
Website/Catalog (1938) Page(s) 44. New Roses 1937. Dorothy McGredy (Pernt. McGredy 1936) F. 3. ....semi-double....The growth is medium with very many thorns. A.H.M.Mts.P.S.
Book (1937) p19. Harry H. Hazlewood. The New Roses of 1937. Dorothy McGredy, HT. (McGredy, 1936) A typical Pernetiana product with characteristic thorns. The colour deserves the title of "novelty", but the blooms only carry 20 petals. It looks as if it will be unhappy in semi-tropical climates.
p116. Allan A. Brundrett. A Victorian Review of the Season's Novelties. Dorothy McGredy, H.T. (S. McGredy and Sons).— Sent out as an improvement on The Queen Alexandra, but so far seems to be similar to that variety both in blooms and in poorness of growth.
Website/Catalog (1937) Page(s) 36. New Roses 1937. Dorothy McGredy (HT. McGredy 1936) Medium size flowers of good shape, sweetly scented and opening well. Outside of petals sunflower yellow shading to crushed strawberry, inside intense vermilion with saffron yellow base. 5/- each. Shows true Pernetiana character with typical thorns. A very striking colour but blooms have only 20 petals.
