'The Sun' rose Reviews & Comments

I was in Wellington during the weekend and enjoyed my first ever visit to the impressive Lady Norwood Rose Garden. They have a bed of 'Sunrose' in bloom (correctly labelled as such), but the label names the breeder as Poulsen. I think this is most likely a simple mistake when the label was made.

Might be some confusion with Poulsen's 1954 'Sundance', 22 petals 2 1/2 inches, blooms yellow changing to pink. McGredy's 1972 'The Sun' has 15 petals of 3 1/2 inches.

Quite likely, but the confusion is in the labelling, because there's no doubting that the rose in question is McGredy's The Sun/Sunrose. I didn't have a camera with me unfortunately.

'The Sun' is growing in both Dunedin Botanic Garden and Henry Edginton Rose Garden, Queen's Park, Invercargill, labelled as 'Sunrose'. Georgina Campbell has confirmed that 'The Sun' and 'Sunrose' are the same cultivar and would have arrived in NZ when Samuel McGredy IV moved from Ireland to New Zealand. The rose would have been grown on and released commercially in NZ in 1974, hence the discrepancy between the dates of introduction.
