'Madame Zöetmans' rose Reviews & Comments
-
-
There are many photos in this file which show a green pointel. I suspect they may be photos of ‘Madame Hardy’ and not ‘Rose Soetemans’. Graham Thomas in his 1976 reference said: “ ....the white 'Madame Hardy' (1832), and her rival 'Madame Zoutmans' without the green eye….
I note in the guide to The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Garden, Mottisfont Abbey, (on which I have pencilled a date of <2012) the following two roses are growing: Mme. Hardy - North Garden, bed 03; and in the Central Garden, bed M Mme. Zoetmans - North Garden, bed 04; and in the Central Garden, bed P.

Yes, there is a lot of mixups in commerce and gardens, even in Graham Thomas' Mottisfont. You will see that even in 2009 'Mme Zoëtmans' is described as having a "tiny green eye". According to Reynolds Hole in 1869, it didn't have one. We have a note to that respect, but apparently it is overseen.

The Note is as good as we can do Jedmar. Thanks. Hopefully, someone will add bloom closeups of the four roses at Mottisfont one day, citing the bed numbers. (Now that is a first - calling for just a full frontal bloom!). Two roses came to me under the ‘Mme Hardy’ name. One, from Ruth Jones, was planted in a bed that is now shaded and it has never thriven. I will move it next May.

The third rose in this game of mislabeling is 'Botzaris'

Ah yes. ‘Mme Plantier’ came to me in 2003 labelled as ‘Botzaris’. And now I need to look closely at my ‘Blanchefleur’ to see if it is actually ‘Botzaris’.

Roy E. Shepherd lists this rose as "Mme. Zoutman" in his book History of the Rose (1954). You might want to add that name to the description. Thanks!

We have 'Madame Zoutman' already as a hidden name. If you search for it, you will be directed to 'Madame Zoëtmans'. This is in order to prevent clutter due to misspelled name variants.
