The sun is an ally to the lavender roses, for it burns out the poor red or magenta tones and leaves them a beautiful shade of pure lilac. I have a row of them back of the tennis-net - Sweet Lavender, Veilchenblau, and Hauff, with two Silver Moons and they make a beautiful group.  Hauff is very fine, with larger, doubler flowers than Veilchenblau;  I imagine it might be a harsh magenta in a grayer climate, but here it is a beautiful colour and would be in any hot summer in America

p130.  Ibid.
Sweet Lavender is cream with pinkish lilac shadings;  Veilchenblau In a hot sun turns really the colour of light violets; Hauff has larger and more double flowers, and a deeper colour, too magenta in cool weather, but in heat a fine lilac.
