Rosaholic's Southern California Garden, a most insightful rosarian, told me that this rose has the most beautiful stamens of any rose she knew. By great fortune Ruth Tiffany, one of San Diego County's standpout
rosarians, happened to have a plant and she kindly provided some budwood. It is now one of my very favorite shrubbies with its rather large blooms disposed in clusters. Color is a brilliant nonfading scarlet. The stamen complex is large, bright yellow and is very slow to brown. The plant is well behaved and disease resistant. I believe this rose would make a great tree rose.

I believe the New Zealand references to the 'Phantom' parentage are incorrect.
On a quick look, Sam McGredy did not use 'Eyeopener' as a seed parent.
But he did use it as a pollen parent many times.
