Phantom MACcatsan. McGredy 1993; Ground cover shrub, 'Eye Opener' x 'Pandemonium'; scarlet; 58 reports on 82 plants; 1-7 years; 90cms; 7.8 rating. This one grows wider than it does tall and it is not unusual to see it 2 metres wide. The flowers are quite large and a bright scarlet red with contrasting yellow stamens so that it makes quite a show in the garden. It is healthy and has little problems with disease and has a good repeat of flowers that hold well. One grower has trained his bush into a standard and it could be at its best this way - to make the most of its bright colour. It won't do well in a mixed border if other growth covers it. If you have a sunny spot that needs brightening up then this could be the rose for you.

Phantom (MACcatsan); McGredy 1993; Ground Cover Shrub; 'Eyeopener' x 'Pandemonium'; scarlet; 12 reports on 12 plants; 1-3 years; 75 cms x 2 metres; 7.8 rating. Grown widely throughout the country and in general well liked. Wairarapa grows it as a standard and it makes a beautiful display. South Canterbury says it gives you a happy feeling, lovely bright garden rose. Northland healthy, spectacular when in flower, is going to get 3 more for landscaping. Otago eye-catching when in flower, each crop comes out all at once. Bay of Plenty loves the scarlet blooms with gold stamens, lovely as a standard. Manawatu a great rose for its type, far superior to 'Eyeopener'. Central Otago bright and cheerful, large heads, a favourite. Waikato have not allowed enough room for it to grow, spreads out a lot. North Otago has it growing in partial shade and is doing well, spectacular rose. Kaitaia growing in the garden the spread is about 2 metres all round and has bloomed heaps, growing in a container (water trough), only half the plant and half the number of blooms. All in all a very worthwhile rose to grow, especially as a standard.

Phantom (MACcatsan); McGredy 1993; Ground Cover Shrub; 'Eyeopener' x 'Pandemonium'; scarlet; 19 reports on 32 plants; 1-3 years; 1.1 metres; 7.9 rating. Further favourable reports this year, all reports find it very healthy with long arching growths. The flowers are borne in trusses .and are large bright scarlet singles with brilliant golden stamens. Very spectacular when in full bloom. Kaitaia thinks it is fabulous and beautiful, grows about 2 metres in all directions. North Taranaki has it growing well as a weeping standard and looks great. Both Central Otago/and Otago say it is very eye-catching and outstanding. Franklin says long arching canes with large trusses of bright scarlet single flowers with brilliant golden stamens, makes a great garden display with good repeat. Waikato says branches loaded with flowers, but the red colour does not appeal. One grower from Kaitaiahas it growing in a drum where it trails over the sides with great effect. All in all a very striking and spectacular rose.

'The Phantom' (Maccatsan) Phantom was named for the popular and very successful musical "Phantom of the Opera". It has big clusters of dazzling scarlet red blooms wrapped around with the darkest green foliage. Its size and growth habit is ideal. The large, semi-double blooms have fluted velvety petals, with brilliant golden stamens. This rose has a repeat flowering habit and also a spreading habit which makes it ideal for a weeping standard.
