Pierre Corneille, French poet and dramatist, was born 6 June 1606 in Rouen, France. Considered the creator of French classical tragedy, his chief works include Le Cid (1637), Horace (1640), Cinna (1641), and Polyeucte (1643). His first play was performed in Rouen in 1629. He died 1 October 1684 in Paris.
