In the year 1955, Egawa Kazei from Niigata City created new varieties like 'Echi no Akana', 'Shiunden' and 'Eikan', and Higuchi Yugen from Gosen City crossed a peony with a peony, from which emerged in 1962 the first yellow peony.

Following this he [Tanaka Shinzaemon] started to issue new varieties towards the end of the Meiji era, and until his death in 1936 he had bred hundreds of peonies, which brought him the nickname "Old Man of Peonies". Representative sorts are 'Godaizu', 'Tamadare', 'Hira no Yuki', 'Hõgoshi' and 'Tsukumushishi', which are still cultivated nowadays.

Nagao Soseien, under the management of Nagao, issued in 1908 the first Plant shipping catalogue of the prefecture. 112 Peony varieties were listed on the first page, among them five sorts like 'Hokan' von Nagao and 'Himegozen', bred by Watanabe Yokichi from the town Kosudo.
