This rose blossomed for the first time in the U. S. 3-17-07

Roses Unlimited will begin propagating Manipur Magic April 2007.

I find the fragrance to be moderate to strong Tea. It's quite nice!, and the blossoms last a very long time.

To my mind 'Manipur Magic' is superior to 'Marechal Niel' in every way.

OK, I have my Manipur Magic in a pot and was wondering if there is any real evidence of its listed hardiness to zone 6, given it's direct Rosa gigantea parentage? I'm wondering if I should risk my life and climb back into a really thorny rose bed and tuck it into a spot against the warm brick wall for a bit of extra winter warmth, or am I worried for nothing and its proven hardy some place at least truly zone 6. If there is evidence it does OK in zone 6, then my zone 7 garden will be no problem. I have a microclimate on the south side of our red brick ranch house that is likely zone 8 within 6 feet of the brick wall, as my daffodils bloom weeks before the ones all over town here in Richmond VA.

Bob, it's a good question. The hardiness zone classification is an estimate and is not based on actual experience with this rose. I share your concerns about hardiness below Zone 7.

Did you ask your supplier if their mother plant is planted outside? This is such a new and rare rose that it will take a while to gather together the information necessary to determine its hardiness. In the interim, I would definitely grow it in the warmest location possible. The problem with your zone is not the low temperatures but the late spring freezes. Giganteas are evergreen and like to grow and blooms early. They (and Teas) are common victims in that Zone 6-7 swath across the middle the USA.

I'm hoping Viru or his wife might comment for me on how this rose's growth might be similar or different from Golden Threshold. I planted that one in completely the wrong place for how upright, thick and stiff the canes are. I was thinking I could train it along a fence, but you can't even bend the canes when they are young. I'm wonding if Manipur Magic might make a good huge free standing shrub or if it can in fact to tamed onto a fence. The photos look gorgeous and I'm totally happy with its half siter Golden Threshold, I just need to get that one moved somehow to a location where it can just go crazy and be what ever shape it wants to be without any intervention from myself.

Under our conditions Manipur Magic has quite a different growth habit from Golden Threshold. This is not surprising as M.M. is probably a diploid, unlike G.T. which is perhaps a tetraploid. I am sure you know that that the parentages are fairly different, excepting for the connection with R.gigantea. Golden Threshold is (Golden Showers x Sirohi Sunrise) and Sirohi Sunrise is Brown Velvet x (Carmosine x R.gigantea), whereas Manipur Magic is Reve d'Or x R.gigantea.
Manipur Magic should be suitable for training on a fence and the stems are definitely more flexible than Golden Threshold. It can be grown as a huge scrambling shrub. Personally i would prefer to train it on a fence as it will be easier to selectively retain the one year + stems, which form the basis for abundant flowering.

I actually sent a check for this rose a week ago and will plant it near its mother Reve d'Or.
