Zone 4a, Wyoming. Sticky clay soil with a west facing garden.
I got Savannah two years ago from the Walmart clearance rack looking pretty much on death's door. It came back from the brink with a few blooms in a lovely color, but smothered in powdery mildew (it was the only rose in my garden with mildew even though it has a prime location and is less crowded than most roses in my garden). I wasn't thrilled.
It died back to the ground over the winter and I was sure it hadn't made it. But a while after the rest of the garden woke up, Savannah started to grow, and has reached a beautiful five feet tall with a steady supply of blooms all summer, not a ton at a time but never without blooms. The mildew hasn't made an appearance and the bush is a nice tidy shape, full, not gangly. So Savannah gets to stay in my garden and I don't really care if it dies back that much if it can recover the way it does. The blooms also last a long time in the vase, making Savannah a good option for gift bouquets.

Healthy, constantly putting out huge, stunning blooms, tolerant of heat and (ahem) intermittent watering...what's not to love about this rose? It's one of my favorites.

How big does this rose bush get? Does it throw out long canes, or stay compact?

Mine hasn't thrown out any long canes. It has stayed a very tidy 3x3ft shrub.

No long canes on my bush either. It seems to like being a small, compact bushy rose.

'Royal Kate' has some dieback in my zone 4 garden but has come through several winters for me. She has a nice strawberry and raspberry fragrance with large blooms on long, straight stems.

Sidonie has fantastic winter survival in my zone 4 garden, needing no pruning this spring, and is covered in buds! Last year it had good repeat throughout the summer and fall even though it was a first year plant. It is sprawling wider than it is tall but is maintaining a tidy shape without throwing random long canes. The bloom form is adorable and the fragrance is exceptional. This is one of my favorite cold zone roses.

That's awesome :) I don't know why Sidonie isn't more popular, she's just adorable.

I honestly don't know. It is a rose that remains small, but whoever discovers it hardly separates from it.
