This rose tends less torward purple then my very similar gallica, Cardinal Richleau. I am suspicious of photos that show this rose to be deeper purple as they may be Cardinal Richleau. It would be very easy to confuse these two roses, and indeed they may have been mixed up in commerce. Taken mid April in the U.S. Southeast. (Mississippi).

Wild flower meadow growing in the lower garden in May. My Gardener Adam and I scattered 5 lbs of wild flower seed in late November and ran a rake lightly over the soil to rough it up a bit.

Darlow's Enigma growing in morning shade. This rose gets no direct morning sun. It is growing under a large Sycamore tree. It does get afternoon sun.
