Heirloom is our bloom champ. We got it in 1996 and I quit trying to count blooms within a couple years when it got over a hundred blooms per flush. Heirloom acts more like a big floribunda than a hybrid tea for us. Iceberg and First Edition try to bloom as much but always come in 2nd or 3rd behind this rascal. Sweet Chariot may have as many blooms. I don't try to count blooms on that monster either. Heirloom gets 5 feet tall and wide here. Foliage is pretty thick and it makes an attractive bush. Blooms open fast and fade quickly in the sun. Color becomes a dirty brownish pale mauve after a week. That is really the only thing I don't like about this rose. Fragrance is almost strong and all those blooms get your attention even with your eyes closed. Deadheading is a chore. Our deadheading sessions usually end up in rose petal fights. Deb hangs out around Heirloom so she has plenty of ammo. Turnaround time is average, about 6 weeks.

Heirloom is not cane hardy. It takes winter well and spring growth is early and vigorous. Heirloom did make it through a couple winters before I began protecting roses. It did so well that I don't bother mounding it.

Blackspot is not a problem here. Heirloom will get powdery mildew if conditions are right. Very good rose even if it is a mauve thang.

Dave, do you have Sweet Chariot in a hanging pot or in the ground. I can't grow anything in a pot and I've tried Sweet Chariot half a dozen times over the years. I was thinking of trying it again this spring but planting it in the ground. I can grow 'bout any rose in the ground. If yours is in the ground, how big is it? Now I still know this is relative because you're in a different zone, but I'm curious. Someone else had mentioned growing it in the ground & I'm still going to give it a try. Thanks, Leslie aka lesdvs9 z9CA

Hi Leslie, SC is planted in the ground. I don't try to keep any roses in pots. Even the micromini, Si, is planted in the ground. I should correct that. We have some cuttings and seedlings in pots. They are buried in the vegetable garden right now. Check at the Sweet Chariot page. I commented more about the monster there. Don't even want to guess how large it will get in your zone/area. Great to see ya here.
