[From "The Trees of San Francisco" by Michael Sullivan, 2004, p. 20:] Victor Reiter moved to 1195 Stanyan St. in 1926. One of the founders of the California Horticultural Society, Reiter was San Francisco's most famous grower, hybridizer, and collector of plants and trees, responsible for introducing many hybridized varieties of plants to the world, but perhaps best known for the creation of many different varities of fuchsias...During the early 1930s, Reiter began building a commercial nursery on the property behind his home...The nursery lasted until 1963, but Reiter continued to plant and care for the specimen trees on the property until his death. Amazingly, the garden still survives...
[From "Past and Present of Alameda County, California", by Joseph Baker, 1914, p. 249:] Victor Reiter, the popular manager of the Hotel Oakland of Oakland, has had an interesting career, connecting him with two continents. He was born in the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, April 14, 1866, a son of Valentine and Annie L. (Leyers) Reiter.
