The breeder of rose Mrs S.W. Burgess was Samuel William Burgess, my great uncle Willie. He was a bank manager (Lloyds) in Tonbridge and kept his prize certificates in his bathroom. He named this rose for his wife Dora.

Thank you - I hope you got my further e.mails with photo of SW Burgess and comments on rose "Annie Burgess", which must have been named for SW's mother. Regards JB I could provide a bit more information about S.W. Burgess the breeder, but I am not sure what you want. Is it possible to find the two Burgess roses still?

Please feel free to share with us anything you think the rose community would find of interest about him. A photo of him would be helpful and of course photos of his roses would be great to include.
We don't have and record of either his roses being grown anywhere but maybe someone will read these comments and contact us.

Please see comment for rose "Mrs S.W. Burgess" S.W. Burgess had no children but his sister was Annie Astell Burgess. Sorry - sister probably not relevant. Much more likely this rose was named for his mother Annie Burgess (nee Peed). I am not sure where this website is coming from but Tonbridge, where S.W. lived, is in Kent, England

This is Samuel William Burgess (my great uncle Willie) b. 1868 Stoney Stratford, Bucks. He was a bank manager (Lloyds) in Tonbridge and bred roses as a hobby (he kept the prize certificates in his bathroom). He named this rose after his wife Dora.
