Lodovico (sometimes spelled Ludovico) Cazzaniga was born at Inzago, to the east of Milan, on 24 June 1872 and died on 4 March 1955. It is difficult to establish a precise list of roses bred by him as he was an employee of Fratelli Ingegnoli of Milan, joining them after working as "capo coltivatore dello Stabilimento agro-orticolo di Udine" (see "Istruzione e sperimentazione agrarian in Italia" by Vittorio Stringher, 1911, p.118) and, after his retirement, worked with his son, Febo Giuseppe. My guess would be that he bred all the Ingegnoli roses, since they introduced no "in-house-bred" varieties before he arrived nor any after he left. My own view is that he might have been the real breeder of 'Aprilia' (under the name 'Diana'), then of Aurora, 1946 HT Cineraria 1946 Fl Lodoletta 1946 HT Scapigliata 1948 Pernetiana Rosalia 1949 HT Aviatore Marco Sommi Picenardi 1948 Pernetiana Brunetta 1955 Lambertiana Carbonia 1955 HT Pinetta 1955 HT Rosabella 1955 Lambertiana Romagna 1955 HT ` Preludio ? Notturno ? Carezza Crocate Violetta Melania These conclusions, published in my book Le Rose Italiane, are based on reading Febo Giuseppe's notebooks and a series of discussions with the latter's daughter, the breeder Carla Cazzaniga.
