The sandy levels on the seashore are frequently covered with a wild rose: Rosa rugosa. It has large dark green leaves and single purple flowers, measuring three inches in diameter, and bears a red round fruit which is much relished by Ainos and Japanese. If preserved in sugar they would make a fine dessert fruit.
