(1861) Page(s) 124. Paeonia obovata Maxim. Maxim. prim. pag. 29. Rgl. fl. uss. pag. 13. n. 41. On meadows in the Buraja mountains. Indeed very closely related to Paeonia Wittmanniana Stev. and strictly speaking not distinct by a clear characteristic except for the colour of the flowers, which are yellow in P. Wittmanniana and red in P. obovata. Still we believe that P. obovata is a good species, which differs in addition through leaves which are strongly blue-green shaded beneath and only sparsely hairy. The form of the leaflets in the examples in our hand passes gradually from broad obtuse oval to obtuse lanceolate-oval. The form of the leaflets is therefore no further differentiating factor. P. obovata differs from P. albiflora, to which its narrow-leaved forms come quite close, by its fairly regular double triternate leaves, whose leaflets are all, or at least the middle one is clearly stalked. the hairs beneath do not give a differentiation, as there is also a hairy form of P. albiflora.
