p31 The [black and white] plate facing page 32 shows an oblong vase filled with a mixture of old roses. The topmost flower and the one at the extreme left are both Tour de Malakoff, and the flat rose almost touching the chimney-piece on the left is Charles de Mills.

p32 Gallica Charles de Mills, an extraordinary name, is a remarkable rose with flat flowers of dark blackish crimson, the sort of rose which you may see now and then on old china and which you feel must have been painted with poetic licence, but it is true and lovely and makes wonderful dark shadows in a bowl of other rich and velvety roses.

The arrangement in the green vase on Plate VII is of two varieties, again 'Hippolyte' and 'Cardinal de Richelieur'; it is a bloom of the latter which lies on the table.

Before bringing this long list to an end I would mention a newcomer to my garden with which I am truly delighted – R. Moyesii Nevada. This tall-growing sturdy shrub has arching branches which bear a mass of bloom, first in June and again later. The flesh-coloured buds open to single cream flowers about four inches across, with a mass of yellow stamens. This hybrid introduced in 1927, I find suitable in form and growth for association with the older roses.
