Hahaha, it's funny, I'd always been thinking about it but then never bought one. Then I planned to buy and plant Souvenir du Docteur Jamain next to Mme Isaac Pereire.... And that one turned out to be an accidental mislabelled Mme Grégoire Staechelin :)))) It's faith I guess :)

Ours is a 14-year old plant and still delights every spring. Wait until you see the more than an inch thick heps!

Yes, but the hips sunburn in hot climates, if west-facing.

I don't regard hips as decorative. If I'm growing things with spikes on them, I want them to make flowers. ;)
Once-blooming really isn't enough in the sub-tropics, because autumn/winter flowers are often better than the summer ones. It wouldn't have to do a massive display in winter, but it would have to do something for me to grow it.

That's a very nice display jedmar!
I've read I think Margaret's comments maybe that Mme GS can have a nice late crop of flowers in her growing zone - I don't know how it is in Europe, in zones 6-7. But if only once flowering, these flowers look so special for me I forgive her the lack of repeat.

Every spring I look at Mme Gregoire and Cicely Lascelles, a bit further along the climber fence, and ask myself if I need both. Then I ask myself which one I'd remove. I still have both.

I'm still not at the stage that I remove any roses (the planting is quite new and everything is alright so far anyway, mother likes them), but Staechelin definitely stays :)
