Late April 2020, SE England. We've had a warm and very wet winter and an exceptionally sunny April. Sweet Sultan is the first rose to have opened one of its blooms after General Schablikine (which is always ahead of any rose I grow by several days, if not weeks). The scent from the unfurling bud on a sunny and windless day, 18 degrees C, is exceptionally fine: the typical dark red rose scent (think Mildred Scheel), but particularly sweet and with the floral overtones characteristic of Sweet Sultan.
