I think this is not the Nuigini rose that Warren found: as far as I know, that one didn't reach Australia. It doesn't show the colour change of Ten Thousand Lights, and doesn't look like it will grow as big. Available from Leonie Kearney Heritage Roses, Samsonvale, Queensland.

The colour is soil-dependent. For Lionel (subtropical Queensland) the flowers opened bright pink. At Blakiston (temperate, zone 9b) it is essentially a red rose. It does have an occasional stripe but stripes are not a prominent feature. Lionel is confident it is a different rose from "Nuigini Pink". He wasn't told where in New Guinea it was collected. He notes that there are many Chinese working in New Guinea, and speculates that one might have brought it with him / her.

How does it compare with ‘Ten Thousand Lights’?

I think Ten Thousand Lights opens more fully. The Blakiston plant of "New Guinea China" is young yet: time will tell whether it reaches the 3m that Ten Thousand Lights can achieve.

The pedicels on “New Guinea China” seem smoother, and the sepals seem shorter. But I am seeing similarities in the shape of the hip, the long receptacle, and probably the prickles.
