Can it be that 'Diana' was re-named 'Aprilia'?
Cazzaniga's notebook for 1934 has inserted in pencil the note that he sent 'Diana' to Rome on 18th January 1936. 'Diana' is mentioned again in his notes for 1935. Then, among the list of 1936 sowings the name 'Diana' is marked with a pencil insertion in brackets, 'Aprilia'. As far as I can see there is no reference in these notes to 'Aprilia' before it won at Rome and no mention of 'Diana' after that date.

You may be right. Although Diana is reported also in a 1939 reference http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.64170&tab=7

That's true, though that report is not totally reliable in my view. Part of the problem, I think, is that I have stated the case badly: perhaps I should have put it in a different way, that is, given the success of 'Aprilia' it is strange that FGC's personal breeding records never mention it but continue to mention 'Diana'.

The 1939 reference certainly is not conclusive! Besides Prof. Gustavo Vagliasindi, by listing Borgatti's roses, quotes both Libia and n.7, whereas, according to many data, Libia is the name later given to n. 7.

I think it likely that the name of the breeder (a unknown Gazzaniga) is a typo of the well known Cazzaniga Febo Giuseppe who bred a Diana in the same period (earlier than 1937).

Thank you for confirming our suspicion. We have merged the Gazzaniga listing into Cazzaniga.

Apparently the two entries for Diana by Cazzaniga/Gazzaniga were not merged.
