Book (1985) Page(s) 74. [Breeder Jean Henri Nicolas] was known as 'The Doctor', a title he rightfully held from his qualifications; he was respected by rosarians in many countries. He died in 1937, shortly after a large, fragrant, pink Hybrid Tea had been named 'The Doctor' in his honour by a Californian rose breeder, Fred Howard.
Website/Catalog (1982) Page(s) 38. The Doctor (Hybrid Tea) A famous old variety which, in spite of a martyrdom to black spot, should not be allowed to disappear into oblivion. Rich, silvery pink with a satin sheen to the petals. Shapely, high centred flowers, strongly scented. 1936. 3 x 2‘.
Book (1978) Page(s) 91. The Doctor Medium - Pink. Remontant. P10. H3. A wonderful pink Rose, with plenty of colour and none of it harsh, which is not always the way of pink roses. The petals were huge, forming a deep, high centred scented flower, from which the perfume was issued beautifully. It was introduced in 1936 in the United States, but the British distributor, Laxton Brothers, hesitated to release it, much to our impatience. Then a grower in Kent advertised it in one of the Trade journals, and my firm with Walter Bentley of Leicester promptly bought all he had. This forced the British distributor to agree to introduction in 1939, but he was not well pleased...... 'The Doctor' was greatly loved in Britain, both as a garden and exhibition rose, until it was discovered that he could not heal himself of blackspot and rust. His flower stems were on the weak side, but could be forgiven, because the flowers rose well above the leaves. A pleasing rose, which leaves pleasant memories; although somebody's memory was short indeed: six plants of 'The Doctor' were sent to the Royal National Rose Society to grow in its Trtals of new roses in 1973. In some ways one can regard 'The Doctor' as the climax of the type of pink Hybrid Tea ushered in during the 1890s. After him came the tougher look of 'Peace's' children. The breeder was Fred H. Howard of Montebello, California; the parents were 'Mrs J. D. Eisele' x 'Los Angeles', two more of Mr. Howard's roses.
Book (1951) Page(s) 95. Mrs. Simon Ross, Geelong, Vic. Pink Roses in My Garden. A rose that has a charm of its own is the outsize lolly pink variety, The Doctor. When full-blown, its dimensions are those of a saucer.

Magazine (1948) Page(s) 11-19. One of the finest pink Roses ever sent out is undoubtedly 'The Doctor'; it was distributed in England in 1938 on the margin of the period set me for review, but it is a great Rose and must be included. It was raised by HOWARD AND SMITH of California and named by them after one of the most famous men in the Rose world of America, DR. HORACE MCFARLAND; his full name had already been given to another Rose so this had to be abbreviated to 'The Doctor,' but everyone knew who was the Doctor. It is a glorious rich deep pink, unfading until the petals drop, and has the strong perfume that one senses before one comes near to the plant. A very large Rose but not too full to be unable to open its long petals in any weather. I have grown it since before its general distribution and it has always been a delight. The plants have not always been as strong as I should like, but I am budding a new bed next year on polyantha simplex stock which may suit it better than has canina.
Book (1947) Page(s) 130. The Doctor (Garden & Show) The large perfect blooms are so exquisite in colouring and substance that they catch every eye. A garden and show rose of the highest quality, and very pleasing as a decorative as well. Buds are large and open to semi-double or double blooms of a lovely shade of satin pink. Freely produced. Healthy grower. Fragrant. Habit 3. (HT). A real champion if a proven strain is procured.
