(= R. arvensis x R. chinensis; Shepherd suggests that R.odorata rather than R. chinensis, may have been the pollen parent, because the flowers have the strong fragarnce of R. odorata). Climbing or trailing shrub, stems 2.5-3 m./8.3-10 ft. long, prickles scatttered, hooked; leaflets 5-7, simply serrate, 4-5 cm./1.6-2 in. long, bald on both sides; flowers many together in large, terminal coryms, loosely double and globose, 4-6 cm./1.6-2.4 in. across, pink, scented, June-July; sepals dropping, pedicels long, bald, fruits globose, red, smooth, but rarely formed. 2n= 14. 'Ruga’ '
A rose one would like to know more about; it was said to be a hybrid between R. arvensis and a China, and to have been raised in Italy early in the nineteenth century. William Paul adds a significant sentence to his approving notice of it: 'A good seed-bearer.' It was light pink, fading to white, 'very sweet'. It is listed in Modern Roses as R. x ruga
