Mr. Nieuwenhuizen was one of the leading Peony growers in the Netherlands and when he came to America, in 1921, he left many of his seedlings in the care of relatives. After joining the Cottage Gardens organization in 1928, we induced Mr. Nieuwenhuizen to bring his best seedlings over to this country for our observation and we believe that the five varieties we are introducing this year will prove of great interest to Peony Fanciers, Professional Growers, and amateur gardeners.

Mr. Nieuwenhuizen's Peonies are not new to the American public since his origination, Mr. L. Van Leeuwen, was awarded first prize for the best crimson Peony at the exhibition of the American Peony Society at Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Seedlings Produced by Our Own Grower.
Out of the hundreds of seedlings we have watched blooming in our testing grounds for ten years or more, only four have reached the high standard of perfection which we have set as our ideal of really good peonies.
They have not been on the market long enough to be widely disseminated so that when the rating was made by the American Peony Society very few collectors had them in their gardens.
Mr. L. van Leeuwen (1916)—Semi-rose type. Late midseason. Large, beautiful flowers of graceful loose formation and delightful incurved petals. While classed as a semi-rose type, the flower is quite full presenting a very charming appearance. Color is deep tyrian rose, almost carmine of a bright even uniform color with delicate reflex. Texture is superb, of splendid, lasting quality, making it invaluable for cut flowers and a most attractive sort for color in the garden. Growth is decidedly vigorous and robust with erect tall stems. See illustration page 15. Each $12.00
