In his 2007 article, Wild Roses in India and the Himalayas, M.S. Viraraghavan mentions the purple stems and Ellen Willmott, in Genus Rosa, adds they're "powered with a fine glaucous dust" as can be seen on the right and left with a blossom in the middle. I agree with Willmott, it's a "striking rose" and judging by the growth it's already done in my garden in less than a year, could easily reach "60 or 70 feet"! (1 of 2). My R. leschenaultiana was grown from a seed given by Viru Viraraghaven of India to Australian trekker David Roberts who passed it along to me in 1996. Planted at the base of a maple tree, it's grown over 30 feet up, beyond the reach of leaf or flower. So I rooted cuttings to keep a plant at touch and smell level. This photo taken June 17, 2020 of one of those potted specimens illustrates a defining character of this species, the sticky red glands visible all over the underside of the leaf (on the left in the photo) and also on the pedicel, hip and outer surface of the sepals, too. The leaves are so glandular they will stick to your finger and they're also covered with a fine white tomentum.
