It is a xero-mesophytic, vogorously branching, low-growing shrub with scaly bark on old branches and brown-red young branches. Thorns are approximate and firm, strongly trigonal-extended at the base. Compound leaves with seven to nine leaflets are 7 to 9 cm long, and oblong-ovate or orbicular. Golden-yellow flowers are born singly. They are 1.7 to 2.5 cm in diameter and have lanceolate sepals that are mostly pubescent on both sides. Black-violet, glossy, glabrous fruits are globular, 5 to 7 mm in diameter.
