I wonder if CLARET/Frykristal and Magie Noire/FryCLARET (only available in France, as far as I can see) are the same rose. Same breeder, same description, same looks, and Magie Noire is not available in the UK at all (which seems odd for a rose bred in the UK). The only difference in description is that FryCLARET has strong perfume (all the French sellers say so), while CLARET is variously described as "highly scented" (Fryers/Bluediamond website), as having "good" fragrance (BBC website), "medium" fragrance (The Fragrant Rose Company), or as having "moderate fragrance" (HMF). But this difference is easily explained away. The comment posted here to the effect that the scent of CLARET is strong in the heat and moderate in cold weather explains the inconsistent descriptions re: CLARET's scent. On the other hand, in much of France (where, if I am right, the same rose is sold as FryCLARET) summers would be either Mediterannean or continental -- that is hotter than an average UK summer, thus drawing out the scent more consistently, and making retailers invariably describe FryCLARET as highly scented. None of this explains why two different codes (if that's what they are called) are used for the same rose (frykristal and fryclaret) but I am still convinced the two roses are one and the same (until Fryers steps up to tell me I am wrong!).
