Registration name: Maréchal Niel (tea noisette, Pradel or Castel 1857)

Bred by Henri & Giraud Pradel (père & fils) (France, circa 1860).
Discovered by Louis Castel (France, 1857).
Introduced in France by Eugène Verdier fils aîne in 1864 as 'Maréchal Niel'.
Introduced in Australia by Charles Wyatt, Frogmore Nursery in 1868 as 'Maréchal Niel'.

Noisette, Tea, Tea Noisette, Tea, Cl..  

Yellow.  Iris fragrance.  Strong, raspberry, tea, violets fragrance.  Average diameter 5".  Very large, very double, borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, cupped, globular bloom form.  Spring or summer flush with scattered later bloom.  

Climbing.  Glossy, light green foliage.  3 to 7 leaflets.  

Height: 10' to 15' (305 to 455cm).  Width: up to 6' (up to 185cm).

USDA zone 7a through 10a.  Shade tolerant.  Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .  Do not prune.

Dedicated to Adolphe Niel (October 4, 1802 Muret - August 13, 1869 Paris), French army general and statesman, Marshall of France since August 1859, Minister of War 1867-1869.

This rose is usually attributed to Pradel, but was introduced by Eugène Verdier in 1864. In the 1880's, Verdier claimed that his friend M. Castel found the rose growing in a Montauban garden. See REFERENCES and COMMENTS.
